Real Sex Offenders Versus “He Hurt My Feelings” Sex Offenders
So I was MTV the other night and an episode of True Life about Sex Offenders was on. Curious I decided to watch it. Low and behold it brought to a light an issue I have been trying to talk about for some time.
The sex offender registry is a GREAT THING in SOME cases. However the problem is that laws on sexuality are so outdated and biased many people are put on the registry and charged with bullshit charges who don’t deserve it!
Now in the case of CHILD MOLESTERS, ACTUAL rapists, etc. I think they should be castrated. There is no sex positive logic that can be twisted to defend child molesters or rapists. Being sex positive is all about being ok with CONSENSUAL acts.
The problem comes much more into play when it deals with the age of consent and statutory rape laws. The two offenders the show featured were NOT sex offenders. One guy was charged because he was 17 having sex with a 15 year old ((not even sure how that works)). The other is the perfect example of why the laws or fucked. The guy was 18, a senior in high school, his girlfriend, GIRLFRIEND, was 15 years old. The two had been dating for over a YEAR, he had met her parents, etc. then when they broke up she went and filed the charges. First of all regret is not rape nor is retaliation. Additionally the sheer fact that it was illegal was insane.
Age of consent laws need to be reflective of instances where both parties are in high school or have some age bracketing. I am sorry to say most high school age girls know what they are consenting to and most cases are more about pissed off close minded parents, or girls who are pissed the guy broke their heart. This is not how the legal system should work. Here is my thoughts on how the age of consent should go.
From age 14 on you can legally consent to having sex with someone who is within 5 years of your age. This takes care of the high school problem and makes it much more. Then the NATIONAL age of consent without restriction needs to be 16. For god sakes if we can trust someone to drive a 2000 pound bullet around then I am pretty sure they know what yes and no means when it comes to sex.
